Gerard A. Cartier Sr.  
1923 2014  

Gerard A Cartier, 90, a resident of Wyndemere Woods in Woonsocket, RI and World War II Navy veteran who served in Northern Africa, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence RI. He was the husband of the late Lucille (Bilodeau) Cartier with whom he celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on September 13, 2007.

Born June 2, 1923, in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Donat and Marie Rose (Gregoire) Cartier.

A graduate of Mt. St. Charles Academy and Rhode Island College, Mr. Cartier was appointed the Woonsocket Education Department's Federal Aid Coordinator in 1965 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. As part of his duties, he supervised federally-funded Compensatory Education programs including remedial reading and remedial mathematics programs, Head Start, and the Neighborhood Youth Corps. He was also instrumental in the establishment of Parent Advisory Councils in several Woonsocket schools. Mr. Cartier also served on the Woonsocket School Committee in the 1950s.

He is survived by two daughters, Yvette M. Trahan of Sarasota, FL, and Paulette E. Cartier of Woonsocket, RI; and two sons, Richard P. Cartier and his wife Kelly of Leicester, MA, and Gerard A. Cartier Jr. of Woonsocket. He was the loving grandfather of Kathryn M. Laferte of Providence, RI, Kelly E. Cournoyer of Harrisville, RI, Richard Cartier Jr. of Milford, MA, Christopher Cartier of Marlborough, MA and Michaela Cartier of Leicester MA. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren: Morgan Cournoyer, Elise Cartier, and Luc Cournoyer.

Mr. Cartier was the brother of Claire Trottier of Pawleys Island, SC; Rolande Dubois of Bellingham, MA; Therese Trottier of Bellingham MA; Estelle Valois of Manville RI; Jeanne Levreault of Woonsocket RI; George Cartier of Wilmington NC; and the late Laurent Cartier. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held on Saturday, March 8th at 9:00AM from CARTIER'S FUNERAL HOME, 151 So. Main St., Bellingham, MA with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM at St. Joseph's Church, 1200 Mendon Rd., Woonsocket, RI. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland, RI. Visiting time Saturday from 9 to 10AM at the funeral home prior to Mass.
