Requesting Research
To request French-Canadian ancestral information, vital records from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont, or other research, you may use the forms at the bottom of the page to order online. You may also order copies of AFGS microfilm vital records here.
In addition to the records fees in the table below, we charge $25/hour to members and $45/hour to non-members for research time whether successful or not.
Research requests are addressed in the order they are received. AFGS will confirm receipt of your request by email. Upon completion of the research, we will email a final invoice for the work performed.
Please return the top portion with a check payable to AFGS in U.S. funds or provide a credit card number to include the expiration date a CVV code, usually on the back of the card. We accept credit card numbers over the phone during our business hours on Tuesday and Saturdays (closed Saturday in July). We are unable to accept or process foreign checks. Non-U.S. residents must use credit cards.
Once payment is received, we will send the research and records to you. A list of sources we researched, whether any information was found or not, copies of records found, and suggestions for additional research, if indicated.

Single Marriage – One marriage to search. Will include the names of the bride and groom, the names of the bride and groom’s parents, the date and place of the bride and groom’s marriage. (Marriages of the parents will be counted as additional single marriages and billed as such.)
Direct Lineage – A straight line of either a husband or wife back to the immigrant ancestor. This will include each couple, their date and place of marriage, and their parents’ names and location of immigrants in France. Price for direct lineages will be determined by the number of generations found times the rates for research as applicable.
Five Generation Ancestral Chart – Standard five generation ancestral chart of 31 ancestors with 8 marriages found. The last column of names will give parents’ names only: no marriages as they will start a new five generation chart. NOTE: The Five Generation Chart will not contain births or deaths. If a birth or death is requested, it will be treated as a SEPARATE request and billed accordingly.
French Translation Service – Translation requests are reviewed to determine document clarity before proceeding. Translations may take up to three weeks to complete. Documents containing many pages may be turned over to a third-party translation service. The third party will contact you for approval before proceeding. They will bill you directly and your payment arrangement will be with them and not AFGS. Microfilm requests may require research for lineages, pedigree charts, or family group sheets, will be billed separately for translation fees the hourly research rate ($25.00 per hour minimum.) Requests for vital records in French must be made on Request for Microfilm Copy Service or Request for French Ancestor forms on the research pages.
Microfilm and photocopies are available at an additional charge. Photocopies are $0.25 cents each and Microfilm copies are $1.50 each.
